The second week research
Since last week, my classmate Jeff and I have decided to explore behavioral psychology. We consulted a lot of information to determine the direction of our experiment, and today is our first research update. The study we finally decided to finalize was the reward and incentive s experiment. This experiment involves manipulating rewards to see how they affect motivation. For example, students could be rewarded for completing a task quickly and then observed to see if they are more motivated to complete the job later in their studies. Jeff and I became interested in this research because the nature of this study also looked at human greed and whether people will generally discard something for a specific benefit. In addition, the experiment is much simpler and more intuitive than other social experiments, which we can do in school.
We have also found a video explaining the experiment, which I have included at the bottom of the blog post.
The reward and motivation experiment is closely related to behavioral psychology. Behavioral psychology is concerned with how environmental and external factors influence behavior, and rewards are an influential external factor that can influence motivation and behavior.
In this experiment, the reward was used as a control variable to determine how it influenced students' performance on the task. The reward, as a positive outcome of completing the job efficiently, reinforced the behavior and increased the likelihood that the student would repeat the behavior. The experiment also included a control group, which helped isolate the effect of the reward and determine if it was responsible for any differences in performance between groups.
This experiment allowed us to understand better how rewards affect motivation and behavior in the school environment. This knowledge can then be applied to real-world situations, such as designing motivational program to increase student engagement or developing effective strategies to promote academic achievement. Overall, experiments with rewards and motivation exemplify how behavioral psychology can be used to study and understand human behavior in various situations.
